Income Generating Project: Development of Rural Handicrafts. |
| Objectives: |
1. To combat poverty and illiteracy by developing income generating projects for the benefit of rural young women and girls;
2. To revive local traditional handicrafts and improve the economic situation of rural families.
|
| Brief: |
Girls and young women in rural areas are amongst the most deprived groups in Lebanon. They are discriminated against in every sphere of life: Seclusion within the home, and denial or limited access to education, resources and employment.
In this light, an income-generating project was set up in the area of Baalbeck in the Bekaa to train young women (15-24) in the production of handicrafts, embroideries and carpets. In parallel, beneficiaries have the opportunity to participate in literacy sessions, and in awareness workshops on gender, health, hygiene and other life skills. |
| Duration: |
2000 - ongoing |
| Location: |
Baalbeck in the Bekaa valley. |
| Target Group: |
Girls and young women from the rural area of Baalbeck in the Bekaa. |
| Partners: |
Ministry of Social Affairs. |
| Challenges: |
Social and financial obstacles. |
| Results: |
Through this project, the association was able to reach out to a deprived group of young women in Lebanon. Having an independent income allowed the beneficiaries to gain self-confidence and raised their status within their own families. |
| Future Plans: |
To benefit from this experience and implement similar projects in other rural areas. |
| Project 2: |
Leadership Training for Young Women Leaders. |
| Brief: |

Sessions are adapted to training needs, and issues tackled include: Conflict resolution; children’s psychology; communication and decision-making. |
| Location: |
Throughout the branches in Beirut, Tripoli, the Bekaa, Mount Lebanon and South Lebanon. |
| Target Group: |
Young women who are involved in the training as participants. |
| Challenges: |
Limited financial resources and declining voluntarism among young women due to economic constraints. |
| Results: |
Increased number of young women at decision-making levels. |
