Activity Title:
Promoting Opportunities for Adolescents in Jordan with a Focus on Girls.

Objectives/Goals:
The project has an overall objective to create public awareness and commitment to adolescents’ development. The Project also aims to:
1. Ensure that Jordan has an accessible & sustainable national knowledge base on the situation of adolescent and young girls and boys aged (10-24) in Jordan.
2. Ensure youth participation in the relevant issues pertaining to the Higher Council for Youth (HCY) and Ministry of Education (MOE).
3. Support capacity building, of 6000 youth workers in leadership, in participatory involvement and in gender.
4. Empower 9000 adolescents (60% girls) with basic life skills.
5. Increase the percentage of women aged (20-24) who are self-employed and actively seeking employment in the labour force by 20%.
6. To contribute to the prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission and of tobacco use among adolescents.
Support:
UNICEF provided technical and financial support to concerned ministries, NGOs and the Department of Statistics, in addition to two resource and training centers.
Brief:
The Project has addressed most of the items on the Braga Action Plan, particularly to emphasizing the right of participation with focus on girls, such as:
1. Empowering 9000 adolescents, 60% girls, with basic life skills;
2. Providing capacity building to 6000 service providers on participatory planning and management of adolescents’ development, in a process of institutional development involving a number of NGOs, the Higher Council for Youth, Ministries of Education, Health and Social Development;
3. Ensuring that data analysis and survey results are based on a developed national strategy.

2. National youth survey entitled “Jordanian Youth: their lives and views” (2002);
3. Anemia among young women of childbearing age (is being finalized);
4. Evaluation of the adolescents programs (2003);
5. The determinants of risk factors among adolescents (2003).
