Activity Title: Development and Participation of Adolescents Programme:
The programme comprises two projects:
1. A society for adolescents
2. Skills for life
 
Date: The Programme is one of four core programmes of the organizational structure of UNICEF-OPT office. It started in 2001 and continues until the end of 2005.

Objectives/Goals: To Make adolescents more prominent in the society by promoting development; by increasing protection; by broadening participation; in order to prepare them to be responsible citizens and parents.

A. A Society for Adolescents” Project:
a) To develop a Community Rehabilitation Centre (CRC)- based National Adolescents Policy that provides framework for policies and programmes, regarding ensuring protection, development and participation of adolescents;
b) To improve legislation and policies based on operational research on adolescents lifestyles and specific protection issues;
c) To provide opportunities for adolescents to participate in community development such as children municipal councils and adolescent led small scale projects;
d) To reach parents and caretakers of adolescents with key messages on adolescents needs and rights.

B. “Skills for Life” Project:
a) To help adolescents to acquire critical skills that will enable them to adopt healthy life styles;
b) To build the skills of and provide counseling to the, marginalized adolescents - including disabled, orphans, victims of violence and abuse, and at risk of substance abuse.
 
Support: UNICEF provides technical and financial support to partners. 
Fields/Tools: Fields of Implementations:
1. Education (life skills based education): UNICEF is supporting projects that help adolescents to acquire skills that enable them to adopt healthy life styles and to deal with the challenges of everyday life, through formal and Non-formal education;
2. Young women;
3. Capacity building;
4. Other: Participation in community development.  
Brief: The programs/ projects implemented based on the Braga Youth Action Plan and the World Program of Action for Youth to the Year 2000 and Beyond are, as follows:
1. Skills for Life Project: Aims at improving the quality of education by focusing on life skills based education to develop the skills of adolescents that assist them in the transition to adulthood and to become active citizens and parents;
2. Society for Adolescents Project has many initiatives through which it provides opportunities for adolescents and youth to participate in community development. Try to influence the decisions that affect their lives and to be service providers instead of beneficiaries.
Examples of these initiatives include “Adolescents for a Change” project, Children Municipal Councils and Peer-to-Peer Psychosocial projects.
 
Conclusion: The following youth related surveys and studies are supported by UNICEF:
1. Situation analysis of Palestinian children and women and young people (2000);
2. Global youth tobacco survey (2001);
3. Study on child-friendly schools (2002);
4. Rapid assessment on child labor (2002);
5. National youth survey (planned in 2003).
