The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which is part of the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP), United Nations Office at Vienna, is the central repository of international technical expertise in matters of crime prevention, criminal justice and criminal law reform. The Lebanon Office, which is an Outpost of the ODCCP Regional Office for Middle East and North Africa, based in Cairo, was established in 1998. The UNODP, in accordance with its mandate of both rehabilitation of judicial institutions and protection of juveniles, has been requested to assist the national authorities in Lebanon to strengthen the legislative and institutional capacities of its juvenile justice system and to formulate a strategy directed towards the improvement of prison conditions for young offenders in Lebanon.
