Date and Venue
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA),
is organizing a sub-regional workshop on gender
mainstreaming in Amman, Jordan during the period 5-7,
February 2007 at the Radisson SAS Hotel.
Background information
In accordance with the Beijing Declaration and Platform for
Action (BPFA), ESCWA Centre for Women is determined to
pursue its efforts to assist ESCWA member states in gender
mainstreaming their strategies, plans, and projects. In
response to the requests of the different member states, the
Centre plans to hold a sub-regional training workshop to
assist in building the capacity of the staff of the national
machineries for women of Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine,
and Syria.(5 staff from each country).
The three days sub-regional workshop will focus on how to
mainstream the work of the different line ministries, while
concentrating on the basic concepts of gender and gender
analysis. The training will also refer to application of
international methods in strategic planning.
Objectives of the workshop
The objective of the workshop is to enhance the knowledge
and skills of the staff of the national machineries for
women to better address gender imbalances and mainstream a
gender perspective through:
- Enhanced
understanding of the basic concepts of gender and gender
analysis.
- Increased
knowledge of the current challenges facing the national
machineries for women regarding mainstreaming a gender
perspective in the different line ministries.
- Better
analytical skills to mainstream a gender perspective in
certain sectors with a special focus on success stories
in certain countries
- Improved
understanding of the elements of strategic planning
needed in every national machinery in order to function
efficiently and effectively
The workshop
will also establish the foundation for a regional forum for
the exchange of good practices on gender mainstreaming, and
the sharing of views on and experiences in overcoming the
challenges regarding mainstreaming a gender perspective in
certain sectors and in the different strategies, plans and
projects of member states.
The Training will be provided by two gender experts: Dr
Taghrid Khoury and Dr Islah Jad.
Participants
The workshop will be attended by staff from the national
machineries for women as well as other line ministries in
Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq
Expected Output
A final report and evaluation of the workshop will be
delivered after the completion of the event, as well as a
check list on how to mainstream a gender perspective in
national policies.
Working languages
The workshop will be conducted in Arabic.
Accommodation
Arrangements have been made with the Radisson SAS Hotel.
All participants are expected to stay at the designated
hotel. All other entitlements in accordance with UN rules
and regulations will be provided upon arrival to Amman.

Travel Arrangements
Each participant arriving from Iraq is kindly requested to
purchase a round-trip economy class ticket within an
established ceiling cost not exceeding USD 622.
ESCWA will reimburse each participant for the cost of the
ticket contingent upon submission of the following
documents:
1- ORIGINAL invoice/receipt IN THE NAME OF THE
PARTICIPANT;
2- Boarding pass;
3- Copy of the ticket.
- Each
participant coming from Iraq is kindly requested to
confirm his/her arrival to Amman on Sunday 4 th of
February and departure from Amman on Thursday 8
February.

Participants arriving from Syria are expected to book
their own land bus/Taxi Damascus- Amman-Damascus
transportation, arriving to Amman on Sunday 04-02-2007
and departing on Wednesday 07-02-2007.Kindly note that
they have to provide ESCWA with a receipt with their
names from the taxi/shuttle.

Participants arriving from the West Bank are expected to
book their own bus/Taxi West bank-Amman-West bank,
arriving to Amman on Sunday 04-02-2007 and departing on
Thursday 08-02-2007.Kindly note that they have to
provide ESCWA with a receipt with their names from the
taxi/shuttle.

Participants arriving from Lebanon will pick up their
tickets from Gefinor, Hamra, MEA offices on Saturday
03-02-2007 in Beirut.It is a two way, economy class
ticket ,Beirut-Amman-Beirut, arriving to Amman on Sunday
04-02-2007 and departure to Beirut on Wednesday
07-02-2007.
- ESCWA will
provide all participants with a daily subsistence
allowance for the duration of the workshop only (5-7
February 2007) and in accordance with UN rules and
regulations.
