ESCWA Participates in the Arab Conference on Population and Development: ICPD @ 15 (Doha, 18-20 May 2009)


The Population and Social Development Section of the Social Development Division participated in the Arab Conference on Population and Development, which was held in Doha, Qatar from 18 to 20 May 2009. The Conference was organized as a collective response of the League of Arab States, Qatar, ESCWA in addition to UNFPA/ASRO to the emerging population and development issues in the region in order to review priorities in the light of the ICPD plan of action and the MDG framework. The Conference also occurs at a time juncture half way through to the MDG target year, 2015.

The Conference aimed at analyzing and debating a set of integrated population and development issues that are of major concern to the region, in addition to sharing best practices and lessons learned. Accordingly, goals for the region will be reviewed and updated and an updated vision (or plan of action) will be developed within the cultural context of the region and within the human rights- based approaches and gender frameworks, national and regional capacity development, environmental sustainability as well as results based management.  More specifically the conference aimed at:



  • Studying and analyzing population growth and trends in the Arab region and the associated demographic factors and their economic and social consequences in light of regional priorities and their developmental dimensions.


  • Reviewing and evaluating the progress achieved towards implementing ICPD objectives within the MDG framework with a view to have a better understanding of driving forces and barriers, have vision for future focusing on priority issues including poverty, maternal health and youth issues with regard to capabilities, opportunities and challenges.


  • Monitoring and analyzing the demographic transition in the Arab countries and its consequences from the perspective of the demographic window of opportunity in line with national and regional indicators; reviewing causes and barriers, gaps and lessons learned from global successful experiences and providing a vision for employing this opportunity in the region based on strengths and comparative advantages.
