Core Functions - Coordination

Regional Coordination

           As the lead agency of the Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM), which was established by the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 1998, ESCWA convenes the annual meeting of the RCM. The purpose of the annual meeting is to facilitate the exchange of information between United Nations agencies and other partner organizations in the region, encourage coordination and promote policy coherence in order to reinforce synergies and avoid the overlapping of activities.

          The principal functions of the RCM include tracking the progress made in the ESCWA/Arab region towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and identifying the key challenges facing their attainment.

          For more information on the RCM, please visit the RCM website.

Interregional Coordination

          ESCWA, represented by PPTCD, participates in the Meeting of Chiefs of Programme Planning of Regional Commissions (MCPP), which was officially established by the executive secretaries of the five regional commissions in 2005. The main functions of MCPP include:

-    Exchanging information and knowledge in programme planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation, including knowledge management;
-    Forging a common understanding in approaches to programme management issues;
-    Engaging in strategic dialogue between the regional commissions and Headquarters-based departments, including the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development;
-    Identifying and advocating optimal use of the comparative advantages of the regional commissions;
-    Enhancing coordination of development activities at the regional level;
-    Developing a common position for the preparation of regional contributions to global events and initiatives.

Global Coordination

         ESCWA participates in the regular meetings of the Executive Committee of Economic and Social Affairs (EC-ESA), which was established by the Secretary-General in 1998. EC-ESA aims to:
-
-    Ensure greater coherence of views within the United Nations;

-    Achieve a better balance between the global and regional dimensions of development, in terms of the setting of norms and standards, technical assistance and analysis;

-    Strengthen the links between United Nations normative, analytical and operational work.
