What We Do - Coordination

ESCWA takes the lead role in programme and project coordination among United Nations entities involved the development work at the regional level. It also participates in a broader coordination of the economic and social development work of the United Nations that involves global Departments, funds and programmes and regional commissions. Furthermore, ESCWA and the other regional commissions work closely together to enhance the regional dimension of the work of the United Nations and to promote interregional cooperation. In these connections, PPTCD plays an important role in facilitating various coordination activities. How do we coordinate?

At the REGIONAL LEVEL

At the GLOBAL LEVEL

At the INTERREGIONAL LEVEL

REGIONAL COORDINATION
As the lead agency, ESCWA convenes annual meeting of the Regional Coordination Group (RCG), which was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 1998. The purpose of the annual RCG meeting is to effect the exchange of information, facilitate coordination and promote joint action in order to reinforce synergies and avoid overlapping of activities.

Among the key work, RCG tracks the progress made in the ESCWA/Arab region towards the achievement of the MDGs and identifies the key challenges facing the realization of those Goals.

  • To ensure a greater coherence of views within the United Nations;
  • To achieve a better balance between the global and regional dimensions of development, in terms of analysis, norm and standard setting and technical assistance; and
  • To strengthen the linkages among the United Nations normative, analytical and operational work.

INTERREGIONAL COORDINATION
PPTCD participates in the Meeting of Chiefs of Programme Planning of Regional Commissions (MCPP), which was officially established by the Executive Secretaries of the five Regional Commissions in 2005. For the period of September 2007-August 2008, ECE chairs and provide the secretariat support to the MCPP. The main functions of MCPP include:
  • Exchange of information and knowledge in programme planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation, including knowledge management;
  • Forge common understanding and approaches to programme management issues;
  • Engage in a strategic dialogue among the regional commissions and with concerned Headquarters-based departments (e.g. the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development);
  • Identify and advocate the utilization of the comparative advantages of the regional commissions;
  • Enhance coordination of development activities at the regional level;
  • Develop common positions for the preparation of regional contributions to global events and initiatives.
