EGM on the formulation of integrated Population
Policies within the framework of good governance
6-8 September 2005
UNESCWA Conference in Amman on Integrated
Population Policies
Under the patronage of Jordanian Prime Minister
Adnan Badran, UNESCWA organized, in cooperation
with the Higher Council for Population in
Jordan, an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the
Formulation of Integrated Population Policy
within the Framework of Good Governance in Amman
from 6 to 8 September 2005.
The aims of the EGM were manifold, primarily:
discussing the various factors holding back
integrated population policies while leaving a
negative impact on the development process; and
mobilizing the efforts of decision makers to
adopt a framework for good governance that
enhances the drafting and execution of
integrated population policies targeted at
improving quality of life.
At the conclusion, participants reached a number
of recommendations stressing the need for
political commitment and commitment to a
strategic vision setting the main framework for
development; establishment of national councils
on population in all UNESCWA member countries;
and making the work of these councils
decentralized in nature. The participants also
underscored the importance of cooperation with
member countries to activate integrated
population policies by establishing mechanisms
and identifying executive measures, most
important among them measurement indicators for
good governance that reflect the effectiveness
of government, private sector, and civil society
institution performance in formulating and
executing integrated population policies.
