Progress toward gender equality and women's empowerment can be measured using various statistics and indicators.

Some indicators for tracking progress towards gender equality have been compiled into country profiles for several Arab countries. These indicators pertain to population structure, health, literacy, education, employment and public life participation.

The data in the country profiles were collected from a variety of sources including the ESCWA Social Statistics Datasets and the databases of UNESCO Insitutute for Statistics (UIS), International Labour Office (ILO), and the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU). The data are for the latest year available.

Definitions are derived from the ESCWA Social Statistics Database.

Other major indicators measuring women and men's capabilities and opportunities include the Human Development Index (HDI), Gender Empowerment Measure and the Gender-related Development Index (GDI) published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the annual Human Development Report.
