National statistical
capabilities in the Arab countries are in need of strengthening.
Critical gender indictors are
absent from national statistical systems.
Data collected is irrelevant to
the empowerment of women and inaccessible to potential users.
This dearth in gender statistics
was underscored in the "Review and Assessment of Progress
Achieved for the Advancement of Women to the Year 2005"
discussed at the Arab Regional Preparatory Meeting for the
Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Amman, 6-10 November
1994.
The Development of National Gender Statistics Programmes in
the Arab Countries (GSP) has emerged to assist in the
improvement of national statistical capabilities.
