Promoting Gender Equality & Women’s Empowerment
The development objectives
Several UN agencies have undertaken activities in Iraq to
compile gender-disaggregated data in a number of fields.
However, the Development of National Gender Statistics in
Iraq Project institutionalizes gender mainstreaming in the
entire national statistical system by aiming to gender
sensitize actors (statisticians and other employees),
processes (data collection methods and techniques) and
instruments (concepts, definitions and classifications).
Funded by the United Nations Development Group Iraq Trust
Fund, the 18-month project aims to:
- Raise awareness on the importance of gender statistics in policy formulation and monitoring, and gender mainstreaming of statistical work
- Improve national capacities to produce, analyze and disseminate quality gender statistics and indicators needed for evidence-based policy-making, with a particular focus on mainstreaming gender equality and women’s empowerment
The beneficiaries
Producers and users of statistics from national statistical
departments, government bodies, NGOs, research centers and
academia… with the inclusion of women and men from
throughout Iraq to ensure broad-based participation and
national ownership.
