The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia
(ESCWA) is organizing a seminar on “Capacity Building regarding
Opportunities and Challenges of Tourism” from 11 to 12 December
2003 at the United Nations House, Riad Solh Square, Beirut.
The Meeting, which will open at 10:00 am on Thursday 11 December
2003, is intended to enhance awareness on the role of tourism in
the economic and social development of ESCWA Member States and to
discuss legal and institutional frameworks related to tourism in
ESCWA Member States, as a tool towards maximizing opportunities
and facing challenges related to the sustainable development of
tourism. The Meeting will also review basic concepts and features
of the International trade in tourism services, and the
competitiveness of tourism services of ESCWA Member States in the
context of the GATS.
Participants will review fields of Arab institutional cooperation
on tourism development and means to enhance regional trade in
tourism services; share various views on the development of
tourism services (government, private sector, international and
regional organizations), and increase technical cooperation in
tourism between ESCWA Member States and related international and
regional organizations.
Attending the meeting will be concerned government ministries and
authorities from ESCWA Member States, in addition to specialized
regional and international organizations such as the World Tourism
Organization, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the United
Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the League
of Arab States, the Council of Arab Economic Unity, the Arab Union
of Hotels and Tourism and the General Union of Chambers of
Commerce, Industry and Agriculture for Arab Countries.
