Lebanese Minister of Transport and Public Work to Open 4th Session of ESCWA Transport Committee

 


Beirut, 10 January 2003 (United Nations Information Service) - The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) will be convening the meeting of the fourth session of its transport committee from 14 to 16 January 2003 at the United Nations House, Riad Solh Square, Beirut.

The meeting, which will be opened by Lebanese Transport and Public Work Minister Najib Mikati at 9:30 on Tuesday 14 January 2003, is intended to discuss the implementing steps for the establishment of the National Trade and Transport Facilitation Committees and the draft memorandum of understanding for regional cooperation in maritime transport; and follow-up on the ratification of the International Roads Agreement in the Arab Mashreq. The meeting will also confirm the adoption of the Agreement on International Railways in the Arab Mashreq, and prepare for its signature during the forthcoming 22nd ministerial session of ESCWA expected to be held in April of this year.

Participants in the meeting will be representatives of the ministries of transport, and public work, maritime ports and customs services in ESCWA Member States (Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, United Arab Emirates and Yemen) in addition to representatives from concerned regional organizations and the Arab Union of Chambers of Maritime Shipping.

Parallel to the fourth session of ESCWA Transport Committee, the second meeting of the board of the Arab Union of Chambers of Maritime Shipping will convene from 14 to 15 January 2003.

It is worth noting that the work plans of ESCWA transport section focuses on facilitating trade and transport and their integration in the Arab Mashreq, including the related information system and the methodological framework for analyzing issues and policies intended to facilitate trade and tourism among the countries of the region and with the world.
