Beirut, 16 January 2003 (United Nations Information Service)--Under
the patronage of Lebanese Minister of Water and Energy Mohamad
Abed Al Hamid Beydoun, ESCWA (the United Nations Economic and
Social Commission for Western Asia) in collaboration with UNDP
(the United Nations Development Programme) is holding a one-day
workshop on “Groundwater Legislation Review and Water Tariff
Analysis in Lebanon” on Friday 17 January 2003 at the United
Nations House, Riad Solh Square, Beirut.
The meeting, which will open at 9:30 am, is intended to enhance
the capacity of the ministry personnel and the personnel of
national agencies involved in water issues in some areas of
Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) specifically in the
areas of groundwater legislation and assessment of water tariff.
The meeting is expected to cover five working sessions, which will
focus on the review of the evolution of legislation; the
utilization and management of groundwater sources in Lebanon, as
well as the identification of the basic components of a modern
groundwater code relevant to the Lebanese context. The meeting
will also suggest measures to update the existing legislation
including their enforcement; review the different tariff
structures applied in Lebanon in the domestic, industrial and
agricultural sectors; identify the basic components of an
appropriate water tariff system, and suggest measures to improve
the existing water tariff schemes by proposing various tariff
designs.
Participants in the meeting will be experts from the Ministry of
Energy and Water, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of
Agriculture, the Ministry of Public Health, the concerned
water-specialized authorities in Lebanon in addition to
representatives from concerned international and regional
organizations.
The workshop on "Groundwater Legislation Review and Water Tariff
Analysis in Lebanon" is part of the ESCWA-UNDP project “the
National Policy Framework for Water Resources Management in
Lebanon”. The project is implemented in cooperation with the
Ministry of Energy and Water in Lebanon.
