Beirut, 30 March 2003 (United Nations Information Service)--
The Lebanese Women's Council; the Follow-up Committee of
Solidarity with Iraq and Palestine; and the Lebanese Associations
against War in Iraq today led a candle lighting demonstration at
the United Nations House in Beirut. Addressing a letter to United
Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, demonstrators urged the
Security Council to take practical measures deploring the
American-British belligerence against Iraq, and issue a resolution
calling for the withdrawal of all invading forces from Iraqi
territories.
Another demonstration was held yesterday by the Civil Campaign in
Support of Palestine and against War in Iraq. In their letter
addressed to Annan, demonstrators called for holding an
extraordinary session of the General Assembly in order to stop war
against Iraq. "The General Assembly has to meet since the Security
Council failed in fulfilling its responsibilities of maintaining
international peace and security", the letter said.
Over the past weeks, the UN House area in Beirut was a continuous
forum for massive demonstrations protesting war against Iraq.
