How do I know if I am eligible?
ESCWA's Internship Programme is opened to students who are:
a. Pursuing graduate studies at the time of application and
during the internship; or
b. Pursuing their studies, in countries where higher education
is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, and have
completed at least four years of full-time studies at a
university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a
degree.
You will be able to apply after you graduate, upon submission of
a certificate from your university stating that you are enrolled
in graduate studies (masters or PhD).
If you are not currently enrolled for graduate or post-graduate
studies at the time you apply for the internship and during the
expected period of your internship at ESCWA, we will not be able
to accept your application.
Internship is not what I want, where can I look for other
activities?
Please consult our Website:
http://www.escwa.un.org
to know more about ESCWA's scope of work and activities. You may
also look at the main Website of the United Nations: www.un.org.
To know about the requirements of UN vacancies in terms of
education and experience, you should look at each vacancy
announcement specifically. You will find links to the UN
Compendium of Vacancies, either from the UN Website or from the
ESCWA Website.
What do you mean by “Endorsement Letter”?
By "Endorsement Letter", we mean that you should include
with your application a letter from your current University
stating that you are pursuing a graduate degree (Masters or
higher degree) and indicating your expected date of graduation
and the area of study.
Do you accept VOLUNTEERS at ESCWA?
ESCWA does not take volunteers. You should consult the
website of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as
they accept volunteers.
How are INTERNS SELECTED?
Interns are selected by ESCWA's programme managers upon
submission of a complete application. The Human Resources
Management Section will review your application in terms of
eligibility and will forward it to the relevant divisions of
ESCWA where the selection will be done.
There is no acceptance "in principle". The Managers will look
into your qualifications and areas of interest in order to
evaluate your application. Placement also depends on available
supervision and office space during the period you are
requesting.
Is there any specific time to submit applications for
acceptance?
Applications are accepted at any time during the year, but
should be submitted at least two months prior to the preferred
dates of internship. On the application form, you will be asked
to mention the period during which you would like to do the
internship and the areas of work that you are interested in.
What do you mean by “Sponsoring Institution”?
By sponsoring institution, we mean the university where you
are currently registered (whether in Lebanon or outside). ESCWA
accepts applications from students who are pursuing graduate
studies only.
Do you accept TRANSLATORS AND INTERPRETERS as interns?
Yes, we accept trainee Translators who are currently
studying Arabic and English languages. ESCWA does not have
interpreters on board. We hire outside experts when we need the
services of interpreters.
What is the DURATION OF AN INTERNSHIP?
Internships are for a minimum of two months, up to a maximum
of six months.
Does ESCWA sponsor scholarships?
ESCWA does not sponsor scholarships. Students may seek
scholarships from their academic institutions or governments. It
is the intern’s responsibility to arrange such scholarships.
Does ESCWA provide HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS AND OTHER ASSISTANCE?
ESCWA does not provide any assistance to interns to cover
expenses or in logistics matters, such as visas, accommodation,
or transportation. We have a list of hotels for which a discount
price would be granted to you upon showing your ESCWA ID card.
You will need to make your arrangements directly with such
establishments.
