Poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon in the measurement, concepts and definitions that needs all international, regional organizations and institutions as well as researchers, economists, sociologists and statisticians to combine efforts and resources to identify clearly adequate indicators for studying it in order to assist in evidence based policy making.

The MDGs with its 8th goal and quantified targets that were adopted in September 2000 by the largest gathering of world leaders in history set a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty by 2015. ESCWA as one of UN regional commissions plays an active role to facilitate the promotion and implementation, both regionally and through back-stopping at the national level, of global commitments within the UN framework. It assists its member countries to bring their perspective to global forums and facilities their participation in regional and international meetings.

POVN website is designed to serve as a tool for knowledge sharing in the area of poverty; it provides relevant documents, links to other national, regional and international organizations and institutions that have similar activities in the area of poverty as well as announcement to relevant meeting and trainings
